Not just the Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift base preorder package comes with an Xbox One controller, Oculus Remote, a sensor, and free copies of Eve: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale. It will start shipping on March 28 and it will set you back US$599. Not that you were probably thinking about spending a lot more money but, just in case you were, sales are limited to 1 unit per customer.

You may need to think about getting a new gaming PC, although the specs are nothing out of this world. For those that may need to upgrade their rigs, Dell, Alienware, and Asus are working on "Oculus-Ready" computers that are specifically designed to work right out of the box with the Oculus Rift VR headset. These systems start at $950.

If you haven't tried VR yet, I can assure you this: once you get used to it, you will not want to go back. This will prove to be an amazing asset for flight simulator enthusiasts and perhaps even more for helicopter pilots as it will offer the ability to move your head around and have better awareness of your surroundings. Nothing the TrackIR doesn't do already, but on steroids. Serious ones too!

In time the price should drop -- and competition will come -- and VR sets will soon become as normal to see in your virtual cockpit as a joystick. Or, better yet, they WILL become your virtual joystick.
